Welcome to PARINS

PARINS (Partnership Approach to Racist Incidents In North Staffordshire) work is focussed on:

• Increasing the reporting of racist incidents, and
• Helping victims of racism with advice, guidance or, if requested, casework support.

To find out what you can do if you are a victim of a racist incident, read on. Help and advice is available as well as details of how to get in touch. If you do not wish to make a formal referral to the police or to a statutory agency and would prefer to talk personally to someone first, contact PARINS or Stoke-on-Trent Citizen's Advice Bureau.

It is accepted that these crimes are seriously under reported. Reporting levels must be increased if racist incidents are to be effectively tackled and community safety made a reality for black and minority ethnic communities.

Increased reporting will allow sufficient information to be collected for the authorities to evaluate and tackle the problem effectively. Reporting also plays a crucial part in crime prevention. Perpetrators may start with 'minor' offences like verbal abuse, but if this is unchallenged, they often proceed to more serious offences.

PARINS recognises that in order to increase reporting, a number of issues must be tackled:

1. Reporting must be made easier and the mechanisms for doing so accessible
2. Victims and communities must feel confident about the reporting process
3. Victims encouraged to identify and report incidents however minor
